Air Quality Monitoring - 2014

Created 05/05/2025

Updated 05/05/2025

Part industry-operated monitoring site (1 January to 30 April): Data received from industry validated by Queensland Government. From 1 May the industry and Queensland Government sites were amalgamated and all data validation was conducted by the Queensland Government.
Period of operation: 1 January to 31 December 2014
Site location (1 January to 30 April): Latitude: -19.2526; Longitude: 146.8272 (wind, rainfall, PM10 - industry site), Latitude: -19.2542; Longitude: 146.8257 (temperature, TSP - Queensland Government site)
Site location (1 May to 31 December): Latitude: -19.2526; Longitude: 146.8272 (joint industry/Queensland Government site)
AS/NZS 3580.1.1 site classification: Peak (port operations)
AS/NZS 3580.1.1 compliance (pollutants): Complies fully
AS/NZS 3580.14 compliance (meteorology): Complies, except for:

  • Trees within 5 metres to the west of the industry/joint monitoring station (no obstructions in direction of port operations).
  • Monitoring stations located on asphalt surface.

Wind sensor: Ultrasonic sensor

  • Height above ground level: 10 metres.

Temperature: Capacitive ceramic sensor
Rainfall (1 January to 30 April): Tipping bucket rain gauge.
PM10: Tapered Element Oscillating Balance (TEOM) Model 1400AB operated in accordance with AS 3580.9.8

  • Measurement values do not compensate for loss of semi-volatile components from the collected particulate matter.
  • Instrument output values are adjusted in accordance with US EPA equivalence designation method EQPM-1090-079 requirements (scaled by 1.03, offset by +3.0).
  • After adjustment, negative hourly PM10 concentrations less than -0.5 µg/m^3 are removed and concentrations between -0.5 µg/m^3 and 0.0 µg/m^3 are set to 0.0 µg/m^3.

TSP (1 January to 7 May): Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) Model 1400AB operated in accordance with AS 3580.9.8

  • Measurement values do not compensate for loss of semi-volatile components from the collected particulate matter.
  • Instrument output values are adjusted in accordance with US EPA equivalence designation method EQPM-1090-079 requirements for PM10 (scaled by 1.03, offset by +3.0).
  • After adjustment, negative hourly TSP concentrations less than -0.5 µg/m^3 are removed and concentrations between -0.5 µg/m^3 and 0.0 µg/m^3 are set to 0.0 µg/m^3.

TSP (8 May to 31 December): Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) Model 1405 operated in accordance with AS/NZS 3580.9.13 (excepting FDMS requirements)

  • Measurement values do not compensate for loss of semi-volatile components from the collected particulate matter.
  • Reported concentrations are uncorrected instrument output values.
  • Negative hourly TSP concentrations less than -0.5 µg/m^3 are removed and concentrations between -0.5 µg/m^3 and 0.0 µg/m^3 are set to 0.0 µg/m^3.

PLEASE NOTE: The Townsville Coast Guard 2014 air quality monitoring site data was updated on 26/10/2015 due to the wind direction sensor being misaligned and the reported wind direction values have now been corrected.
