Infraspecies Scientific name below Species level.
Species Author Name of first publisher of the species name.
Infraspecies Author Name of first publisher of the infraspecies name.

Yes for state indicates species is (i) is known or may occur in the state; (ii) is extinct in state but extant elsewhere; (iii) a translocated and intensively managed population is established in the state.

In accordance with IUCN mapping guidelines, vagrant records for a state are excluded unless the species is explicitly listed as threatened by the State/Territory.

The value “No NSL_id” in the NSL Name field indicates the name is not recognised in the National Species List (NSL) of names. As the NSL is still being populated, a blank entry in this field indicates the NSL does not yet contain the species in question.

How the data is compiled

The data is compiled by a computer program developed by the Environmental Resources Network (ERIN) that draws directly from the SPRAT database. The threatened Species name and status are the same data used to automatically produce the EPBC Act List of Threatened Fauna and EPBC Act List of Threatened Flora and individual species profiles.

The NSL name has been matched in SPRAT on Family, Genus, Species, Infraspecies Rank, Infraspecies, Species Author and Infraspecies Author. Only complete matches are reported. Where no match exists the field is blank (not in NSL yet). NO NSL_ID is reported where the EPBC Act name is not recognised in the NSL.

The lists of species for each state are also contained in the SPRAT database. These were initially derived as a snapshot by spatially overlaying state/territory boundaries (including coastal water to 3 nautical miles) with the indicative species mapping that underlies the Protected Matters Search Tool. Additional species listed on state threatened lists were also added. As minor spatial boundary mismatches may spuriously indicate the presence of a species in a state, the prospective lists have been reviewed and adjustments made. This spatial analysis resulted in a number of species being added to the indicative state lists.

The data is automatically updated when changes to any of the fields are made in the database.

Note that:

(i) the data takes account of species synonyms so that appropriate species state lists are incorporated;

(iii) a number of marine fishes have an EPBC status of Conservation Dependent (these are not a Matter of National Environmental Significance).

(iv) procedures are implemented to update indicated presence on state/territory lists as distribution mapping is revised.

(v) the data can be linked to other SPRAT extracts e.g. Threatened Species of National Environmental Significance related documents via the ListedID field.
