Abstract

The dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.

The surface water PAE has been derived using maximum flood extent and stream flow data analysis for rivers in the MBC subregion.

Most rivers in the subregion are ephemeral. Apart from a few wet months (the wet season in this region is October to April), river flow is zero or close to zero, except for the Dawson River. The volume of surface water generated and used in the mining and CSG developments throughout the year is much larger in comparison. Consequently, potential discharge from developments to these rivers could have a significant impact on the riparian environment. Since there will be little or no natural streamflow for most days of the year, the quality of released water also remains potentially unchanged along the rivers.

It is unclear how far any effluent water would travel in the natural water courses before being of no concern due to dilution, evaporation, seepage, chemical transformation or a combination of these. Factors that influence this include the quality and quantity of the release or spillage, existing flow in the receiving waters and the prevailing weather conditions.

Buffers were applied to the Dawson, Moonie and Weir rivers. These vary between 5 and 7 km and are not symmetric along the channels. The widths were influenced by the extent of the riparian vegetation.

Dataset History

The PAE boundary was originally defined in Google Earth and saved to a KML format file, which was then imported into ArcGIS as a shapefile.

Buffers were applied to the Dawson, Moonie and Weir rivers. These vary between 5 and 7 km and are not symmetric along the channels. The widths were influenced by the extent of the riparian vegetation.
