From 1 July 2019, the Distribution Priority Area (DPA) replaced Districts of Workforce Shortages as the distribution system to direct medical practitioners to communities of greatest need across Australia.
The methodology for assessing need changed from a simple GP to population ratio to a more accurate picture of where patients access their services, taking account of a range of demographics (gender/age) and socio–economic factors.
There are two DPA layers for GPs; one for General Practitioners and one for Bonded Medical Students.

The DPA classification system is an impartial mechanism and the Department of Health cannot make discretionary changes to the status of an area. *The next annual update is scheduled for 1 July 2020.
