Cropping - sugarcane trash

This data describes total sugarcane trash produced as dry tonnes per year published by local government area (LGA).

Calculated from cane production figures (t/ha green) published annually for each Mill Supply Area (MSA) by the sugarcane industry association, Canegrowers, using the relationship between cane production and trash amount (t/ha DM) published by Mitchell and Larsen (2000). Values for each MSA are then aggregated to a LGA proportional to the sugarcane land use footprint.

It should be noted that retaining trash residues provide benefits of environmental stewardship and sustainability to reduce sediment, nutrient and pesticide losses, while enhancing moisture retention, weed management and soil health.
