Special Management Areas

Created 27/03/2025

Updated 28/03/2025

A dataset depicting the amalgamation of all the Special Management Areas within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP), located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The Special Management Areas included in this dataset are: Species Conservation (Dugong Protection); Seasonal Closure (Offshore Ribbon Reefs); No Dories Detached (Offshore Ribbon Reefs); Restricted Access; Public Appreciation; Natural Resources Conservation (Mermaid Cove, Lizard Island); Maritime Cultural Heritage Protection; and Princess Charlotte Bay. The dataset is based on descriptions in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Regulations 2019 and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Zoning Plan 2003 and was created by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) in 2008. The dataset is intended to act as a tool to illustrate the type, location and spatial extent of the different Special Management Areas in the GBRMP. For further information, refer to Schedule 5 of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Regulations 2019 and Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Zoning Plan 2003. Please note, sufficient data to determine mean low water is not available, therefore the coastal boundary lines follow the coastlines as defined by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s indicative mainland: islands; reefs; cays; and rock boundary (Great Barrier Reef Features) dataset.
