ASRIS Australian Soil Classification - Dominant Soil Order (250m raster)

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.

This is a 'best of' dataset of dominant soil order according to the Australian Soil Classification. ASRIS level 5, level 4, level 3 and the Digital Atlas of Australian Soils vector datasets are combined (stated order is the order of preference) to produce a composite soil attribute raster dataset (250m). The ending date shows the time at which the data was extracted from ASRIS.

Dataset History

The data held in ASRIS are sourced from state/territory and federal agency soil surveys. The type of data collected for soil surveys are quite varied and depend on the requirements of a particular study, but also rely on the available resources at the time of the survey. Level 5 is the most detailed polygon mapping, with soils usually mapped at 1:100 000 or better detail. Level 4 polygons come from surveys mapped at around 1:250 000, typically land systems mapping. Level 3 polygons come from surveys mapped at around 1:1 000 000 and the Atlas of Australian Soils is mapped at approximately 1: 2 000 000.

A depth weighted soil attribute mean is calculated for all input datasets. All the input datsets are rasterized and stored in the GDA94 geographic coordinate system and cells are 0.0025 degrees which is roughly 250m. The soil attribute value for the dataset is taken from the cell centre for ASRIS level 5 (if available), then level 4, then level 3 and if no data exists for this cell the data is taken from the Atlas of Australian Soils.
