Deeper water fish and benthic surveys in the Lord Howe Island Marine Park (Commonwealth Waters) using Baited Remote Underwater Video Stations (BRUVS (TM))

In February/March 2004, surveys of benthic habitats and fish faunas were undertaken in deeper waters of the Commonwealth waters surrounding Lord Howe and Balls Pyramid rises.

Baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS (TM)) were used as a non-extractive method to sample the fish and shark fauna. It was planned that a fleet of six BRUVS (TM) would be set in selected habitats identified by the towed camera (Towvid) array. However, on the first set two BRUVS (TM) were lost due to snagging of the rope in heavy swell, and it was decided to set only 4 BRUVS (TM) in flat shelf habitats inshore of the steep shelf break.

A total of 22 BRUVS (TM) were deployed along 5 transects previously surveyed using Towvid. Deployments were located to the north east (6), east (4) and west (4) of Lord Howe Island and to the north east (4) and east (4) of Balls Pyramid. A further BRUVS (TM) was deployed in Comet's Hole in the Lord Howe Island lagoon.
