Accumulation of carbon in mangroves of Malaysia

Created 24/06/2017

Updated 09/10/2017

The flux of organic material between land, ocean and atmosphere was estimated for three different aged previously logged forests. Sediment nitrogen and carbon flows are described in relation to forest production.

Biomass and productivity of forests were estimated by DBH and modified light interception method. Sediment accumulation rates were estimated from gamma spectrometric measurements of soil profiles. Oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, dissolved nutrient fluxes were estimated from glasss incubation chambers. Sediment, leaf and rainwater nutrient pools were estimated by auto-analyser. Sulphate reduction, nitrogen fixation and denitrification rates were estimated in mangrove soils.
