National Connectivity Index 2.0 (2001-2018)

ARCHIVED

Created 21/10/2024

This indicator (NCI version 2.0) measures the amount of connected habitat within a biological neighbourhood. It accounts for how habitat condition influences the perceived connectivity of habitat, thereby promoting or impeding biological movements such as foraging, dispersal and migration. For data download follow link: NCI 2.0 downloadThe NCI v2.0 is reported as the proportion of remaining habitat connectivity relative to a fully connected landscape (i.e. pre-1750). It is designed to be non-specific to individual species or habitat types, enabling it to represent biodiversity across biological scales and ecological systems. The NCI v2.0 incorporates the latest habitat condition data (HCAS version 2.1, 2001-2018 epoch) and provides an assessment of landscape-level habitat connectivity at a national scale. The index provides detailed visualisation at a 250 m resolution across the entire continent that can be used for reporting on status and trends in landscape connectivity, and alongside habitat extent and condition in biodiversity assessment and conservation planning. The NCI v2.0 updates the habitat data and methodology of previous NCI version published in 2014.
