Guidelines for groundwater quality protection where wastewater is irrigated are in their infancy in Australia. An evening workshop was conducted during the course of the Aquifers at Risk conference to present examples of the problems which have occurred in the past and the research which is currently underway at a number of sites to provide a basis for guideline development Working groups conslstmg of state authorities, consultants and researchers discussed the policy and technical issues. There was general agreement on the need for a systematic approach to licencing and for appropriate management models as proposed in a Land and Water Resources Research and Development Corporation project.
