IMOS - ANMN South Australia (SA) Spencer Gulf Mouth Mooring (SAM8SG)

Created 13/03/2025

Updated 13/03/2025

The SA Spencer Gulf Mouth Mooring (IMOS platform code: SAM8SG) is one of four South Australian regional moorings designed to monitor particular oceanographic phenomena in coastal ocean waters. The mooring is located at Latitude:-35.25, Longitude:136.69. It was first deployed in June 2009. SAM8SG monitors currents due to the seasonal high density saline outflow from Spencer Gulf onto the shelf. This outflow dominates the physical characteristics of the SAIMOS survey region during the winter period. The strength of the outflow is thought to generate eddies through baroclinic instabilities and therefore may be a significant source of eddy kinetic energy in the SAIMOS region.
