Interim Classification of Aquatic Ecosystems in the Murray Darling Basin based on the Australian National Aquatic Ecosystems (ANAE) Classification Framework - Wetlands

The wetlands component of the Interim Classification of Aquatic Ecosystems is a compilation of wetland polygon mapping for the Murray-Darling Basin using the best available mapping from state jurisdictions (South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales), Australian Government agencies and other organisations. Data sources range in scale from 1:25,000 to 1:250,000. The interim Australian National Aquatic Ecosystem (ANAE) classification framework has been applied to all wetland polygons varying by system type (lacustrine, palustrine, riverine, estuarine and springs). Floodplains are classified in a separate layer. Attribute values and final wetland types are included in the attribute data table. This dataset was previously split by systemtype into four separate datasets, but has been re-amalagamated into a single dataset. This data has been licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia Licence. WETLAND_CURRENT can be obtained from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (see http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/forestry-and-land-use/maps-imagery-and-data for further details). For lacustrine and palustrine aquatic ecosystems, the MDB_ANAE geodatabase is more suited to wetland projects involving other jurisdictions. While much of the data for lacustrine and palustrine wetlands was sourced from WETLAND_CURRENT, there may be some inconsistencies between MDB_ANAE geodatabase and WETLAND_CURRENT. The two datasets can be linked through the AltSrcID (MDB_ANAE geodatabase) and Wetland_No (WETLAND_CURRENT data set) fields. SA Due to the Basin-wide nature of this dataset, accuracy of final classes has not been ground truthed comprehensively, which could impact results of any analysis using this data. Therefore it is imperative that this dataset is assessed as to fitness for use in any application and decisions made about further levels of validation required. Significant care should be taken if information derived from this dataset is to guide decision making, form binding agreements regarding target setting, compliance of any form, or monitoring of achievements, this includes for the purpose of summarising areas of wetland types.
