Three key examples of IOCG deposits in the Gawler Craton, Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena, are summarised with updated published information. This is followed by a description of regional- to deposit-scale hydrothermal alteration in the Olympic Cu-Au province. The third part of the talk illustrates some methods of targeting higher grade Cu-Au mineralisation within broad regional alteration systems, in deeply covered terranes. These methods, developed during the Gawler Project at Geoscience Australia, include the application of inversion modelling to regional potential field data, and the use of geochemical and isotopic methods to help in "vectoring" towards high grade mineralisation.
