Numerical models dataset: rifting in Large Igneous Province settings - The William's Ridge (Kerguelen Plateau)-Broken Ridge study case

Created 13/03/2025

Updated 13/03/2025

Rift processes in continental and oceanic settings have been thoroughly studied through observational analysis and numerical models. However, limited observations and lack of numerical modelling showing rift evolution in Large Igneous Province settings leave a comprehensive understanding of rift mechanics unresolved. This dataset consists of input files for the creation of numerical models showing the thermo-mechanical evolution of rifting in Large Igneous Province settings, focusing on the William's Ridge-Broken Ridge study case." Model runs in the study used dealii 9.3.0. The ASPECT version can be found at: https://github.com/EstherHeck/aspect/tree/fastscape_update_again_erosional_base_level-undo2780-before-rebase-on13mai22-Kais-and-ZhiChens-Version The FastScape version can be found at: https://github.com/Djneu/fastscapelib-fortran To install this version of ASPECT with FastScape:

Create a build directory for fastscape and compile it with an added flag for creating a shared library. cmake -DBUILD_FASTSCAPELIB_SHARED=ON /path/to/fastscapemake make

Compile ASPECT with a flag FASTSCAPE_DIR pointing to the fastscape build folder with the shared library cmake -DFASTSCAPE_DIR=/path/to/fastscape/build -DDEAL_II_DIR=/path/to/dealii -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release /path/to/aspect make

Note: ASPECT will still compile and install even if a FastScape version is not found. During cmake, it should state whether or not FastScape was found, if it was not you'll need to rerun cmake. Note: For FastScape visualization add the following line to your .bashrc: export GFORTRAN_CONVERT_UNIT=‘big_endian’ Input file for each model (.prm file) shows distinct key parameters: - Model 1 (High crust-high mantle density): Crust density: 3150 kg/m3 Mantle density: 3300 km/m3 Lithosphere thickness: 60 km - Model 2 (Low crust-high mantle density): Crust density: 2900 kg/m3 Mantle density: 3300 km/m3 Lithosphere thickness: 60 km - Model 3 (Thick lithosphere): Crust density: 2900 kg/m3 Mantle density: 3300 km/m3 Lithosphere thickness: 90 km - Model 4 (Low crust-low mantle density): Crust density: 2900 kg/m3 Mantle density: 3200 km/m3 Lithosphere thickness: 60 km Parameters files for all runs used in the study: A Large Igneous Province core complex in the William’s Ridge (Kerguelen Plateau)-Broken Ridge conjugate margins L.
