Oil Mallee Belt Plantations Grid (DPIRD-101)

Created 13/01/2025

Updated 08/04/2025

A gridded (20,000 ha grid squares) data showing density of Oil Mallee Belt Plantations in WA. A dataset was created representing oil mallee plantations in the state. The data is an extract from the DPIRD land use areas of interest database. The land use database contains block and belt planted mallee trees. Only belt planting areas of interest have been extracted in this dataset. Belt planting regions were determined by digitising areas identified from orthophotography. In a small region of the state field verification work was carried out to help validate the mallee data. Field data was used to extrapolate interpretation of mallee areas beyond the field work area and to better identify belt regions of oil mallee. The belt plantings were gridded using 14.1km by 14.1km or 200km2 sized grids representing 20,000ha. The grids were attributed with “Total_Area” - the total area of mallee in the grid block and “Ground_Truthed” - if there was any ground truthing within the grid area.
