Primary and Secondary Coastal Sediment Compartment Maps

The National Classification of Coastal Sediment Compartments captures information on the spatial extent of all sediment compartments on the Australian coast. The classification implements a conceptual framework that supports regional and site-specific coastal management and can guide the selection of approaches to modelling shoreline response. The classification is based on the sediment systems and the geomorphologic processes that operate therein. This information is fundamental for predicting how the shoreline responds to the processes that act on it, both in the current and future climate. These include changes in waves and currents associated with sea-level rise and the placement of coastal infrastructure, e.g. sea walls and ports.

The classification is provided as two maps depicting primary and secondary sediment compartments, defined by polygons intersecting the coastline. The classification is hierarchical, such that secondary compartments fall within the extent of the primary compartments. Compartment extents, as identified by a panel of independent coastal science experts, were based on geology, geomorphology, topography and shoreline aspect. Primary compartment borders occur where these features were identified at scales between 1:250 000 and 1:100 000. Secondary compartment borders occur where these features were identified at scales less than 1:100 000

The seaward and landward boundaries of the compartments were defined by the offshore bathymetric depth and the onshore topographic elevation, respectively as follows: -130 m and +50 m elevation values for primary compartments, and
-50 m and +25 m elevation values for secondary compartments.

This product is the result of a collaboration between Geoscience Australia and the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Climate Change, Technology and Tertiary Education. The spatial data shown in the maps, along with a detailed report and spatial data for the remaining broader scale compartments, will be available via web delivery in late 2013 through the Geoscience Australia website (www.ga.gov.au).
