Proposed Southern Plan of Management Boundary

Created 27/03/2025

Updated 28/03/2025

This spatial layer depicts the proposed planning area boundary for the new Southern Plan of Management. The planning area extends from approximately Midge Point to the southern boundary of the Marine Park aligning in most parts with the Mackay/Capricorn Management Area (except at the northern coastal area where the boundary follows the Yuwibara Native Title Determination). The boundary is within both the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park boundary and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Mackay/Capricorn Management Area boundary. The proposed planning area spatial layer was created by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in July 2023, in preparation for the first round of public consultation as part of the development of the Southern Plan of Management. A plan of management’s objectives under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 are to improve the protection and conservation of Marine Park values, while providing for multiple uses and managing user conflicts. During the public consultation phase, comments are sought on how to protect the Marine Park values and manage use into the future.
