Radar Thunderstorm Tracking (Merged)

Created 07/10/2024

Updated 07/10/2024

The Bureau of Meteorology operates a Nowcast Application Server that processes data from a number of radars in the Bureau's network to identify and track storm cells. These cells are depicted as ellipses (either current or forecast) with track lines showing the direction of the cell movement. The process is automated and has no human input. The cells have the following attributes: age (age of cell in seconds), reflectt (reflectivity_threshold in dbz), volt (volume threshold in square kms), h (height in km), cellvol (cell volume in square kms), celltop (top of the cell in km), projarea (projected area in square km), meanarea (mean area in square km), maxdbz (maximum dbz (decibel relative to Z)), hmaxdbZ (height of maximum dbz in km), vil (vertically integrated liquid ie estimate of the total mass of precipitation in the clouds), stormcat (storm category), hailprob (probability of hail in pecent), hailm (hail mass in kg), hailmaloft (hail mass aloft in kg)

The radars for each storm track information is available are Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Yarrawonga, Melbourne, Bairnsdale, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs. These radars have been combined into one dataset. In some cases cells derived from neighbouring radars may cause overlapping areas of different severity.
