Recovery of Great Barrier Reef coral reefs from disturbance (The Three Reefs Project)

Updated 09/10/2017

Monitoring of the recovery of Green Island reef, Feather Reef and Rib Reef, after outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) commenced in 1989. Starfish outbreaks had reached maximum levels on Green Island reef in 1980, on Feather Reef in 1982 and at Rib Reef in 1984. Surveys were repeated in 1990, 1993, 1994 and in 2003, after subsequent starfish outbreaks at Green Island reef in 1998, Feather Reef in 2000 and Rib Reef in 2002. These reefs were also affected by bleaching events in 1998 and in January-February 2002. A site was chosen in the north to northeast sector and in the southwest sector of each reef. Each site encompassed a near-horizontal reef shoulder and adjacent shallow reef slope. At each site, 3 replicate belt transects (32 x 0.6 m), separated by approximately 10 to 15 m were haphazardly placed along each of three depth contours (1, 3 and 6 m below the reef flat). Each coral colony (hard or soft) wholly or partly in each transect was recorded. Species (or if not known, genus and growth form) and maximum lateral dimension were recorded.
