The Bureau's "Day + Night" product is for the Australian region, and is a composite of Himawari8 true colour (derived from Ch1, Ch2 and Ch3), and Himawari8 Infrared (Ch13 greyscale). The composite GIS image is at 1km resolution covering Australia in equirectangular projection. The true-colour images (derived from Ch1, Ch2 and Ch3) derived from Himawari-9 observations (every ten minutes), are based on reflected visible light. These are useful, for example, for identifying fog and low cloud, which may not be visible in thermal infrared images because it has a similar temperature to the ground below. The visible light images only show parts of the Earth that are in daylight during the scan. Areas with no sunlight to reflect are replaced, in our ‘Day + Night’ view, with greyscale thermal infrared (IR) imagery (Ch13: 10-12 micrometres). IR images are derived from radiation emitted from the Earth and its atmosphere at thermal-infrared wavelengths. To match the familiar colour of clouds, the infrared imagery colour table is inversed, which shows cloud as shades of white.

Data are sourced from the Japan Meteorological Agency's geostationary satellite, and the Bureau processes the data (including altering the projection to equirectangular). JMA imagery is available from: http://www.jma.go.jp/en/gms/index.html?area=6&element=1&time=
