Ray Zehr from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration developed the Zehr enhancement, which applies temperature colour ranges to the cold end of the scale. This highlights deep convection that is generally associated with tropical cyclones and thunderstorms.

The Zehr enhancement is applied to Himawari-9 satellite Infrared (IR) images, which show the temperature of the underlying surface or cloud. IR images are derived from radiation emitted from the Earth and its atmosphere at thermal-infrared wavelengths (10-12 micrometres).

Temperatures are represented by a grey-scale. Dark colours indicate warm regions (low cloud, sea and land) and increasing white shades depict higher, colder clouds. The IR image is sourced from the Japan Meteorological Agency's geostationary satellite, Himawari-9, Band 13 (10.3-10.6 micrometres)

Data are sourced from the Japan Meteorological Agency's geostationary satellite, and the Bureau processes the data (including altering the projection to equirectangular).
