The Bureau of Meteorology issues Severe Weather Warnings whenever severe weather is occurring in an area or is expected to develop or move into an area. The warnings describe the area under threat and the expected hazards. Warnings are issued with varying lead-times, depending on the weather situation, and range from just an hour or two up to about 24 hours. Severe Weather Warnings are issued for:

Damaging winds:

Wind gusts ≥ 90 km/h (49 knots) or mean wind speeds (averaged over 10 minutes) ≥ 63 km/h (34 knots) except for: Tasmania: Wind gusts ≥ 100 km/h (54 knots) for westerly winds and wind gusts ≥ 80 km/h (43 knots) for easterly winds NSW: For elevations ≥ 1900 metres, wind gusts ≥ 125 km/h (68 knots) or mean wind speeds (averaged over 10 minutes) ≥ 80 km/h (43 knots)

Destructive winds:

Wind gusts ≥ 125 km/h (68 knots) or mean wind speeds (averaged over 10 minutes) ≥ 89 km/h (48 knots) except for: Tasmania: Wind gusts ≥ 110 km/h (59 knots) for easterly winds

If both phenomena of "Damaging_Winds" AND "Destructive_Winds" occur, the interpretation is "damaging, locally destructive winds"

Intense rain: (rainfall rates that exceed the 2% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP)) that may lead to flash flooding;

Heavy rain: (rainfall rates that exceed the 10% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP)) that may lead to flash flooding;

The states warnings have been combined into a national product for Web Map Service and Web Feature Service layers.
