The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is the leading repository of natural history collections in Tasmania.

The zoological collections serve as taxonomic reference specimens, vouchers for biogeographical data and include irreplaceable specimens of extinct animals and historically significant items.

TMAGas zoology collection of over 125,000 specimens represents the diversity of the Stateas fauna. This includes important type specimens, historical taxidermy and rare and extinct animals such as the Thylacine (the Tasmanian Tiger) and Tasmanian Emu.

The research collection is speciman-based and also includes tissue samples for molecular research.
