The Jurassic - Cretaceous Carpentaria Basin of northern Queensland and eastern Northern Territory and adjacent marine areas approximates to the Gulf of Carpentaria and its eastern and southern hinterland (Fig. 1). The Cainozoic Karumba Basin overlies the Carpentaria Basin; its boundaries are the watersheds of the Gulf of Carpentaria drainage basin (Fig. 18). This Bulletin and its maps are a summary and a synthesis of geological information collected during field surveys which began in 1969 by combined parties of the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ), and of all other geological investigations in the area. It also includes a review of geophysical surveys of both Basins. Local detail can be found in the Progress Reports. Explanatory Notes, and papers listed in Tables 1 and 2. Geological mapping was based on the use of aerial photographs of the RC9 Series (1:80 000) except in the northeast of Cape York Peninsula where the older K17 series (1:48 000) and other aerial photographs were used to obtain complete coverage. Landsat imagery was used to supplement aerial photographs. Mapping was supplemented by shallow stratigraphic drilling and augering (see Table 1) and by wire-line logging of water and other bores under contract (Down Under Well Services Pty Ltd) and by personnel from Geophysical Branch, BMR. Smart & others (1974) list details of holes logged; copies of logs are held by BMR, GSQ. and the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission (IWSC), Brisbane.
