This bulletin presents the results of a geological survey carried out jointly by the Bureau of Mineral Resources and the Geological Survey of Queensland, and it is a pleasure to record the large measure of friendly co-operation which has attended the investigation at all times. The Bulletin is presented, for convenience, in two volumes: Volume I contains the text and accompanying illustrations, and Volume II is an atlas. The survey began in 1950 and systematic field work was largely completed in 1954. However, since 1953 the region has undergone notable development; the opening of Mount Isa Mines Ltd's copper smelter in 1953 led to the reopening of many old copper 'shows' and the search for others; the discovery of uranium in 1954 initiated a year of spectacular activity and resulted in the location of the important Mary Kathleen uranium deposit; and extensive testing of the Constance Range iron deposits gives promise of large-scale development. Investigations connected with these developments, detailed mapping of several areas, and considerable regional check work in the years 1955-58 have added greatly to our knowledge and understanding of the region; the results are incorporated in the bulletin. As the Precambrian of North-Western Queensland forms an entity and had not previously been systematically described and interpreted as a unit it was deemed necessary to give a full account of the region, including details of climate, topography, vegetation, and history. A lengthy report has resulted. For ease of use the bulletin has therefore been designed as a reference book, with more or less self-contained sections. This form of presentation has inevitably led to a fair amount of repetition. It is hoped that the bulletin will prove useful to a wide variety of readers, who will seek to obtain very varied information from it. By use of the detailed list of contents, appendices, and the geographical index it is hoped that all readers will be able to find readily the information they require. To help further the bulletin has been divided into two parts: Introduction and General Geology, on the one hand, and Economic Geology, on the other. An outline of the geology, and the geological history, is given for the general reader on pp. 36-55. In Part II brief descriptions of the surface expression and the secondary zone of mineral deposits are given to help the prospector evaluate surface and shallow sub-surface indications.
