Traditional Use of Marine Resources

A dataset depicting the spatial extent and location of the areas of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) that are accredited under Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements (TUMRAs). The dataset was created by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) in 2008 based on consultation with Traditional Owners to indicate the spatial extent and locations of areas of TUMRAs in the GBRMP, located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. TUMRAs are jointly accredited by the federal and state governments. At a federal level, traditional use activities are managed under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 as well as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Regulations 2019. Further, the Great Barrier Reef Zoning Plan 2003 recognises that under Part 13, Section 211 of the Native Title Act 1993 Native Title holders may undertake traditional use of marine resources in the GBRMP. At a state (Queensland) level, traditional use activities are managed under the Marine Parks (Great Barrier Reef Coast) Zoning Plan 2004 and the Marine Parks Regulation 2017, both of which acknowledge Native Title rights as outlined in the Native Title Act 1993.
