Tsunami Warning

Tsunami activity for Australia is monitored by Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) on a 24/7 real-time basis.

The first advice provided by JATWC will be a nation-wide product. This product is either 1) a National No Threat Bulletin advising no tsunami threat to any part of Australia or 2) a National Watch advising potential tsunami threat to one or more parts of Australia but tsunami is not yet confirmed and the threat to Australia is at least 90 minutes away so standby for updates. Unless the National Watch is cancelled shortly after (within one hour), any updates will then become State/Territory based, as either a Regional Watch (tsunami not yet confirmed and the threat to the particular State/Territory is at least 90min away), or Regional Warning (tsunami confirmed and/or the threat to the particular State/Territory is less than 90min away). When the threat to each State/Territory is no longer expected, a Cancellation of Watch/Warning will be issued for each State/Territory.

All products are generated through Bureau of Meteorology's Tsunami Decision Support Tool which also produces Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) messages that include National Watch, and State/Territory based Watch/Warning/Cancellation Products and cover Australian offshore Islands of Christmas, Cocos, Norfolk, Lord Howe and Macquarie, as well as the Australian Antarctic Stations of Casey, Mawson, and Davis. In this upgraded tsunami CAP version, each Regional Warning will clearly delineate zones under two different levels of threat – Marine Threat for danger in the marine environment requiring action of "Get out of water", and Land Threat for danger not only in the marine environment, but also sea flooding or inundation to low lying coastal area requiring action of "Go to higher ground at least 10m above sea level or move at least 1km inland".

It is very important that CAP users go to the JATWC website www.bom.gov.au/tsunami to acquire the complete set of tsunami warning products and details for Australia. Tsunami CAPs have been combined and linked to the Tsunami Warning Zones to produce a Web Map Service layer.
