Video sampling of coral reef benthos at Davies Reef and John Brewer Reef, Great Barrier Reef

Five video belt transects were recorded on the reef flats of Davies and John Brewer Reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef during September 1988, and resampled concurrently by video and line intercept transects at Davies Reef in September 1990.

Five video belt transects (200 m long x 1 m wide, designated T1, T2, T3, T4, T5) of reef flat benthos were recorded at both study sites. An additional 4 transects were made Davies Reef to investigate variability in percent cover estimates among transects nominally in the same place.

Abundance data on individual coral species or genera from the first 50 m of each video transect were extracted using regular linear point sampling. Percent cover estimates were determined by assigning items underlying sampling points on paused images to an appropriate benthos category.

As well as coral species, coral growth forms (Branching, Digitate, Encrusting, Foliaceous, Massive, Plating), non-scleractinian lifeforms, and non-biotic physiognomic attributes (Bare rock, Rubble, Dead coral, Sand) were recorded.
